About This Coffee

Roaster's Tasting Notes: Apple / Berries / Maple Syrup / Black Tea. Process: Washed. Varieties: SL28 / SL34. Roast Date: May. Thom Bargen is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. More than 895 smallholder farmers in Mathira, Nyeri deliver coffee cherry to Gichathaini Factory, which is operated by the Gikanda Farmer’s Cooperative Society with over 2,800 members. These farmers typically grow SL28 and SL34 varieties on small plots under one hectare, valued for their deep roots and ability to thrive with limited water. Coffee is cultivated using sustainable practices, and only ripe cherries are selectively handpicked and carefully sorted at intake. Afterward, the cherries are pulped, fermented, washed, and dried on raised beds with close attention to even and controlled drying conditions. The newer Batian variety, introduced in 2010, offers disease resistance and earlier production, making it an increasingly attractive option. Farmers receive agronomic support and soil testing services, helping them better understand and manage their soil health. This targeted approach reduces input costs while improving yields and overall coffee quality.
